The year 2011 has seen numerous advancements in the field of medicine and medical research. Here’s a look a few of the more exciting advancements.
For more information on medical advancements you can do research at online directories such as Canada 411.

New arthritis medication. NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are used as the main treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The most common of these NSAIDs is aspirin. However, these drugs can cause stomach issues. A new drug called Vimovo combines an anti-inflammatory drug with another drug called esomeprazole that helps alleviate any stomach issues.

Prostate cancer drug. Abiraterone is a pill that is given to men with advanced prostate cancer. Previously, chemotherapy was the only option to help slow the spread of the cancer and it had side effects such as nausea and hair loss. This new medication extends survival rates and does not have as many negative side effects as chemotherapy.

New drill to clear arteries. A new pneumatic drill has been developed that can break down deposits in leg arties caused by peripheral arterial disease. Previous medical treatments for PAD included inserting a tiny tube into the main leg artery. A wire was then sent through the tube to break up the deposit. However, if the deposit was a hard substance, the wire could not break it up. The new drill uses a wire whose tip vibrates at a very high speed, which puts a hole in the deposit. After this, a balloon can be inserted and inflated to break up the deposit.

Traumatic brain injuries are injuries that impact how a brain functions normally. These types of brain injuries can have a variety of causes and are not specifically the result of a scull fracture. For instance when a trauma patient falls into a coma or loses consciousness the possibility of brain damage increases as time goes by.

There are many treatments that trauma patients go through to help improve both mental and physical needs of a patient. Many patients who need physical therapy often seek legal representation through a Los Angeles brain injury attorney. Having legal assistance can be helpful during such a difficult process. Having an attorneys is useful for going through paperwork and possibly being compensated for medical costs that are a result of brain trauma.

Therapy helps those who have undergone trauma by exercising the muscles and improving functionality, movement and control over extremities. Range of motion exercises can help stiff muscles and improve flexibility. Weight exercises can help build strength that has been lost after an injury. Balance exercises can help paitents control their head and bodies. Other types of training will even help assist patients in learning how to walk and hold their own weight.

Physical therapy can take a long time and is often a little painful. However, it can help get patients back to a normally functioning life. For some patients physical therapy is not recommended so it is important to talk to a therapist or a physician is highly recommended before seeking out physical therapy treatment.

Are We Recording?

Has your doctor moved to electronic medical records yet?

As the rest of the world moves from hard copies to digital files, someone decided it was time to get rid of all that paperwork you have to fill out when you visit the doctor, and the world agreed. Not that your medical history goes away by any means; rather it is put into digital form. There are many reasons electronic records are preferable to paper ones. Here are three:

Reduce Clutter and Waste

Everything in the medical world has to be recorded and tracked, which adds up to a stunning amount of paperwork. That makes for nightmares of filing cabinets and an incredible amount of clutter, not to mention the toll it takes on the environment. Moving to EMR eliminates all that frustration without sacrificing the records themselves.

File Protection

Anyone ever lost a piece of paper? What if that paper is your medical record, or the results of the test you just underwent? File loss is especially significant in the medical world, as the files are crucial to care. Electronic records mean there’s no paper to lose, and backed-up copies mean your file will always be available.

Less Paperwork

Think about visiting the doctor and how much paperwork you have to fill out each time. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could just access the records you already filled out, last time you went to the doctor? That’s the premise of electronic records. Your record is collected all in one place and anyone with authorization can pull it up. Now that should be reason to celebrate.

Healthy Living While Pregnant

It is tough to be healthy in the United States today. Obesity is at an all-time high, and it is easy to see why. Tasty but fattening food is available on every street corner. Doughnuts seem to be brought in nearly every day at the office for someone’s birthday. The temptation is always there to eat unhealthy food, and the access to poor dietary options might become even more tempting during a pregnancy.

Eating for two might come with an increased appetite, but it does not mean that mothers can eat with reckless abandonment. Rather than considering a pregnancy to be a time to eat, it needs to be a time to carefully consider everything that a mother consumes. Staying healthy during a pregnancy is about making the right choices and sticking with a plan. The first, and perhaps the most important decision that an expectant mother must make is to decide on a doctor.

A cliché states that it takes a village to raise a child. The mother needs to realize that even though it might seem like it at times, a pregnancy does not mean sticking it out alone. Getting with a doctor early and often during the pregnancy will keep the mother and child healthy. The doctor can map out a plan for diet and exercise during the different stages of the pregnancy.

Having a child means a change in the lives of parents. Even though the mother cannot act as if nothing is different in her life, having a baby does not mean that she can ignore her own health. Diet and exercise are important even when a woman is expecting. Monitoring the pregnancy week by week should including maintaining a healthy diet and getting in exercise. Having a child means a life chance, but it should not mean abandoning a healthy lifestyle.

Tools for Finding a Doctor

Moving to a new town includes a laundry list of details that need to be taken care of before being considered settled in. After deciding on a place to live, the next step is picking a house. Settling on a home might be the biggest and most expensive decision. After settling into a new place to live, setting up local services such as power, cable and garbage pick-up are as easy as making a few phone calls.

Even though it might not immediately come to minds, choosing a new physician might be the most important decision facing people that move to a new location. Rather than leaving such an important decision to chance, choosing a doctor through an affiliate program provides people with the best possible resources to make an informed decision.

An affiliate review gives people options. Looking for a doctor requires more than a perfunctory search. Going with a doctor with ties to an affiliated hospital ensures that his or her services have been reviewed and meet high professional standards. Rather than leave your personal care up to someone based on search engine results or through their marketing, finding a doctor through an affiliate network gives people the security of knowing that their physician has the skills necessary to be a successful and reliable physician.

Doctors that work through an affiliation with a hospital can be discovered through searching the profiles provided by the hospital. You can often search for doctors by specialty and location. Finding the best health care for you and your family can be made much easier by going through an affiliate search. It might not be as difficult as tracking down a doctor through word of mouth, but going through an affiliate search for a physician is more reliable. Do not ignore the resources provided by hospitals when seeking a doctor.

Considering the Implications of home care for Alzheimer’s patients

For the families of those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the issue of care is one that will likely cause a lot of sleepless nights.

If a satisfactory decision is to be reached then everyone involved will have to face some uncomfortable truths. While it is perfectly natural for the children and grandchildren of Alzheimer’s patients to wish to take the responsibility of care for themselves, this may not always be a realistic or viable option. Alzheimer’s patients are unpredictable at times and can demonstrate behaviors that may be disruptive to a family home.

Considering to handle Alzheimer’s on their own is commendable and one should not blame them for trying, but the truth is that there are factors that need to be carefully weighed before trying to take on this formidable task.

Is this care going to be appropriate for the family? Does the primary care-giver know and fully understand how to care for a sick and confused elderly patient? Does this care-giver have the patience and understanding to cope with the frustrations that come from caring for Alzheimer’s.

Are there children involved and if so what ages are the children. Is the love and attention required for the children going to be compromised at the expense of the elder?

The sad reality is that for Alzheimer’s patients, the world is a confusing and disturbing place. They can and will take out their frustrations on anyone who is near them. It is important that relatives of Alzheimer patients understand that residential care facilities have staff who are specially trained to handle and care for these patients and it is not an unkindness to place them in their capable and professional hands, enabling you to take care of your own children. All that your loved one would have asked of you when they were healthy and well is that you do not forget them. So make sure that you visit often, be confident that you are doing the best thing for your entire family and most of all be at peace within yourself that you have done the right thing.

The Many Uses for a Prepaid Credit Card

There are so many uses of a prepaid card, it’s actually hard to count them all. But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to try.

First, there’s vacation. You can use a prepaid credit card to keep up with what you spend while you’re having your fun. Also, by carrying just your prepaid credit card, you lower the chances of your cash, traveler’s checks, or other credit cards getting stolen.

Second, there’s business travel. If you use a prepaid credit card on a business trip, again, you are not only able to keep up with your expenditures better, but you may even have dual documentation for accounting, reimbursement, and tax purposes. You can use the information that is given with the card, as well as any receipts you received each time you used the card.

Third, there’s specific expenses. Many people like to set aside a specific amount either each week or each month for things such as work lunches, fuel costs, or other things. Using a prepaid credit card allows them to keep these purchases separate, which again can make it easier to reconcile expenses or spending records.

And then there’s gift giving. You may not have considered giving a prepaid credit card as a gift, but think about it. By giving a prepaid credit card, you don’t have to worry about the recipient having to get a check cashed or keep up with money. The card is right there, ready to be used whenever the recipient is ready.

These are just a few examples of the many ways a prepaid credit card can be used. You should be able to come up with a few of your own. When you do, you might want to share them so that others can take advantage of your good ideas. That way, everybody benefits.

About Niaspan and Its Common Side Effects

CHICAGO - JULY 23: A pharmacist holds a bottle...

Niacin (also commonly known as vitamin B3) has been found to be effective in treating abnormal cholesterol levels. It has been marketed for this purpose under the name Niaspan and is available by prescription. Niaspan is an orange tablet coated in a thin film and made to release into the body over an extended period of time; it comes in three dosage strengths containing 500, 750 and 1000 mg of niacin respectively.

In addition to raising good HDL cholesterol levels and simultaneously lowering bad LDL cholesterol levels, Niaspan also reduces the risk of heart attacks, particularly in individuals whose cholesterol levels are abnormal, and can be combined with other medications to slow the buildup of plaque and the hardening of arteries found in individuals who have both coronary artery disease and bad cholesterol.

Niaspan side effects include feeling nauseous, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, headaches and a group of side effects that lumped together are referred to as “flushing”. Traits of flushing include reddening of the skin around the neck, shoulders and face accompanied by sensations of warmth, itchiness and/or tingling. Flushing is an extremely common side effect of using Niaspan, affecting up to 88 percent of individuals for at least the first few weeks of taking the drug.

After the first few weeks, often the flushing will subside; until then, Niaspan’s web site advises that you take your daily dose just before bedtime so that the effects of flushing will more than likely occur while you are sleeping and you won’t even notice them. If the tingling, warmth or itching awakens you during the night, take care not to sit up or move around too fast, as lightheadedness and dizziness are often also present. Another common complaint from users of Niaspan is that the drug upsets their stomachs; the web site advises people to take their Niaspan with a meal to eliminate this problem.

Our Genetic Makeup: Why Some Get Sick and Others Don’t

It might seem unfair, but there are some of us out there that tend to get sick more often than others. Whether it’s the common cold or something more serious like cancer, there are some people who just tend to pick up every little sickness. While we can’t really explain why some people develop more serious diseases than others, we do know that our genetic makeup has a lot to do with it.

What is Genetics?

Short and simple, genetics are what makes up our DNA. Genetics determine how tall we will be, what color hair we have, the color of our eyes, and even what kind of diseases we will be more susceptible to. If your grandmother passed away from breast cancer, it could be in your genetic makeup to also develop breast cancer.

What Can We Do to Stay Healthy?

Yes, genetics play a big role in our lives. However, that doesn’t mean that you can just sit back and let Mother Nature take over. There are things you can do to help protect yourself.

- Eat healthy. We increase our immune systems and our general health when we eat properly. Take in lots of leafy greens and fruits.

- Exercise. Getting enough exercise can really go a long ways towards keeping us healthy. When our heart and our lungs are in good shape, we’re better able to fight off diseases.

- See a medical professional. It’s always a good idea to get a check up and find out what kind of shape your body is in. You can head to your local medical clinic or look for a travel nurse to come to you. There are travel nurse jobs out there that are specifically for coming to your home.

The first step to preventing anything is to be armed with knowledge. So head to your doctor and get the knowledge you need to know about your genetic makeup.
