Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common health problems among men. This health condition reduces or eliminates a man’s ability to get or maintain an erection. Whereas ED is most often experienced by older men (above 40), it is not uncommon for younger men. The good news is that, in spite of the negative impact on your sex life and self-confidence, ED is not too difficult to overcome.

Get Some Counseling

Erectile dysfunction might be a result of an unhealthy mental or emotional state. You might need to see a counselor, who can help you address your relationship issues, guilt, or other psychological problems.

Visit a Doctor

A doctor can identify any medical reasons that might have caused erectile dysfunction. Based on your medical examination and underlying causes, your doctor can recommend a plan of action. Your doctor may also suggest that you buy some Viagra to maintain your libido and self-confidence.

Share Your Feelings with Others

Since erectile dysfunction can be caused due to emotional reasons, sharing your feelings with others might be helpful, too. If you are shy talking to your friends and family about this issue, you can register at an online forum for ED patients. You can then discuss your problem with real people and expect some helpful responses.

Try Medication for Quick Results

For maintaining your sex drive and a healthy relationship, you may want a medicine that can deliver quick results. For instance, you can buy Viagra online right from your PC. Using the Internet to order Viagra is particularly useful for people who don’t want to reveal their identity to others.

Eczema And Genetics

Eczema is a common disease that is seen in young children. This is a disease of the skin. There are various people who suffer from rashes in the skin. The skin also becomes scaly and dry. There are also red patches on the skin. All these are common signs and symptoms in people who suffer from eczema. This is also seen mainly in the people who are in the younger age group.

The genetic problem that is seen in one person is passed on to other generations from the mother to the child. When this happens, there seems to be no respite for those who suffer from the disease. The truth is that though the disease is passed on from one generation to another, most of those who are affected do not have any signs of the disease after the age of five.

The genetic diseases like eczema cannot be prevented easily. This is because of the problem in the genes of the person. To overcome this as a health problem, the genetic modification needs to be done. This is easier said than done. For the modification of the genes, the gene typing has to be done. A lot of research is still needed in this field so that the modification of the genes is possible to treat the people who are suffering.

Though the research is done and the genetic typing is done, there are a lot of ethical issues involved in the modification of the genes. So, all these have to be overcome before the prevention of the disease can be done with genetic modifications. So, any person who is suffering from eczema needs to understand that though the disease can be treated, it may pass on to the next generation. Awareness needs to be created so that the person who is affected does not get depressed because of this skin disease.

Health Needs Of A Geriatric Patient

A geriatric patient is a person who is old. There are many older age group people who are present in the world. This is mainly because of the proper health care that is available. As various diseases are prevented very early by giving prompt and correct treatment, the life span of older people has increased. As more people are living till a older age, they have much more health needs than it is commonly known. These needs need to be identified by the family members and other people so that a geriatric patient is healthy.

Awareness of the needs of a geriatric patient is much more important because only when people are aware of the needs will the needs be met by the health professionals. The health needs may concern various specialties. One of the main needs of a older person is the prevention of eye complications. As a person becomes old, there are various risks for eye problems. Some of the eye problems commonly seen include those like cataract formation. It is important to overcome this problem by identifying the cataract and then surgically removing it. This will help to prevent the eyesight from failing.

Hearing problems are also common in old people. It is important that the person is treated with the consultation of an Ear Nose Throat specialist. This will help the person to be able to hear either normally or with the use of a hearing aid. There are also various other health concerns of old people. Each of the systems in the body may start failing in the person. It is important to provide adequate health care to the person to overcome this problem.

There are some people who are so old that they may not be able to walk. There is a need for a caretaker who meets all the needs of the person. A community nurse and a community physical therapist should meet the old person each and every day and help them to meet their health care needs. A physician who is specialized in Geriatrics also needs to be consulted.

All About Human Genome Sequencing

There have been various advances in the technology in the last few decades. As the technology has improved, the various fields that are related to it including genetics has also improved. The role and the use of technology in the field of genetics has been amazing to say the least.

The latest trend is the one in which the human genome sequencing is being tried. There have been several successes in the past, where the genes of various animals and organisms have been successfully sequenced. A few of the major successes have been the gene mapping of round worm and the fruit fly. It is being said that the human genes are also very similar to that of the other animals. In fact scientists say that the genes of the mice and the genes of the humans are very similar.

The genome sequencing or the complete gene mapping for humans involves the process in which all the genes are mapped. This will help a lot in the process of research. There are many situations where the people who suffer from certain diseases pass on the disease to the future generations. The role of genetics is to try and prevent the genes from transferring the diseases from one person to the offspring.

Other than the prevention of such diseases being carried, the role of genetics is also present in the treatment of such diseases by methods like gene therapy where a transgene is transferred to the diseased person. This transferred gene will overcome the disease that is present. All these are possible mainly because of the mapping of the genes. The human genome sequencing is a very tough job because of the thousands of genes that are present, which can cause changes in the traits of a person. In fact, there seems to be about 38,000 genes that need to be sequenced.

Nature Versus Nurture: a Silly Comparison

If you have ever paid a lot of attention to the people who debate back and forth about the conflict between nature and nurture, most of their arguments stem from an intrinsic belief that these two forces are not constantly at work within the same organisms, and working together for the same basic goals. While human beings have been shown to attempt to fight our own instincts through the use of nurture based rules which prevent or bring about certain types of behavior (or at least the public illusion of performing such a behavior), what is nurturing with the natural tendency to do so? How could it possibly go about without us having a natural tendency to want to teach our young people a particular thing?

Nurturing young people is a completely natural trait in many higher species. The rule is, the longer it takes for a species to intellectually develop, the more time its young have to spend with their mother learning things. In snakes and other creatures in which the reptillian brain is all that there is, there is no interaction between mother and children (unless she eats them). However, in many higher mammalian species, nurturing can happen for decades after birth. It is literally in our nature to be nurturing. So how could these two states be independent of one another at all?

Nurture does influence the develop of some species. This is really very little more than the reward of certain behaviors and the punishment of certain other behaviors. If you find that swinging through the trees helps you to survive and breed more effectively, then you (and your offspring) will be rewarded if you go swinging through the trees. If, however, you are more rewarded by swimming in a lake, this is what you (and ostensibly your offspring) are going to do far more often. Nature gives us the ultimate nurturing- if we do well, we will survive and reproduce.

Atavism and the Regulation of Genes

Autosomal recessive gene
Image via Wikipedia

Every species has a certain kind of genetic blueprint for how it is supposed to develop. Indeed, every individual within any given species has their own very specific genetic blueprint which their bodies start out following and generally continue with throughout their lives. However, in some cases there is a sort of issue which can arise, as a gene which is supposed to be expressed in one way is accidentally expressed in a completely different way from the way it was intended to be. Because of this tendency, we often find a phenomenon known as atavism in various different species, including humans. Atavism has been defined as the disappearance of a trait for several generations, followed by its reemergence later on within the same species.

Atavism is often the result of the failure of a particular gene to be regulated in the way it usually is. For example, whales still have the genetic tendency to have legs at the rear sides of their bodies. And in nearly every case, these legs do not develop in the slightest. However, in some extremely rare cases, this genetic regulation does not go as usual, and a whale is born with a tiny set of vestigial legs dangling off of its body. And in the same vein, sometimes a chicken has the same type of failure, which results in it having the same basis which causes other, similar species (like their genetic ancestor, crocodiles) to grow teeth.

Atavism has been fairly certainly shown to have come out of the failure within a particular individual for certain genes to be regulated as they normally would be within that species. This genetic regulation, in some cases, is fairly optional, as there is no harm to the lack thereof. However, in some cases it can end up in tragedy, such as the lack of genetic regulation which causes a resistance to malaria to turn into sickle cell anemia within a few people.

Atavism in Action

There are many examples of atavism in the animal kingdom, including that of human beings who have traits which represent our evolutionary past. Atavism is defined as having a trait’s absence for several generations and then having its subsequent reappearance in a life form. In a lot of cases, many species will occasionally show signs that they used to have a trait which they no longer do, and have not had for a very long time. It appears in cases as diverse as whales, snakes, chickens and humans, and most likely happens to some extent in every species which has evolved out of the primordial muck from which all the life we know of sprung. Such is the way that a species’ past can be known.

Did you know that humans have all of the genetic traits necessary to have a tail, if certain conditions were to be met? While humans almost never grow tails (and those which some people do grow are vestigial), the tendency is present in every single one of us to do just that. And in a similar vein, did you know that chickens have all of the DNA and the physical structures in their jaws to produce teeth? Of course, telling a chicken to cheese for the camera would be a little insane (they don’t understand our speech), but it can happen.

A group of scientists a few years ago even slightly altered the DNA of a group of chickens so that they actually grew structures that resemble teeth. Considering that this was a very minor alteration indicates that chicken teeth are not a new introduction, but nothing more than atavism. This is very much the same way as how some whales and snakes, at least when they are developing inside their mothers, have legs. While very few whales or snakes are actually born with legs (and those legs are completely non-functional), it does demonstrate that they had them once.

Lifting Weights can Change who you Are

It is a little known fact, not so much among scientists but among the general public, that your DNA can actually be altered through the thoughts and actions you practice on a daily basis. While your parents did give you a set grouping of DNA, what they gave you is unbelievably malleable. Believe it or not, you can actually change how your body works through activities which are as simple as working out on a regular basis. Consider how much different a person’s body tends to become when they begin to work out regularly, and it should be obvious that there is something which goes on inside them which is different than what they were before. What a lot of folks think is happening, however, is just an exterior change.

When you perform an activity like lifting weights seriously, your body produces more testosterone. Keep in mind that while this is similar to what steroids do, it is not something which will cause you harm. This is a perfectly natural chemical reaction that your body is designed to do. Your muscles and body hair will begin to grow more quickly by a huge margin over what happened before (which was most likely little to no growth, or even atrophy). When this change begins, your DNA will actually change somewhat as a consequence of what you are now doing.

What is truly interesting about being able to make a concerted, proactive change in your own life is that it opens the door to all kinds of other possibilities that you may have never considered. While further research is definitely necessary before we all go off and try to make huge changes to our genes, who knows what else may be possible with little more than a different thought process and a concerted, prolonged effort? Far too many people have never even considered that they can change their lives, but now we know they can do so.

Making Mutant Mice

By Richard Wheeler (Zephyris) 2007. Image of E...
Image via Wikipedia

The creation of mutant mice might sound like some kind of a bad science fiction movie, but in reality this is something that researchers do all of the time. Through doing what is called a paralogous knockout, a mouse (or theoretically, just about any kind of animal) can be made which does not have a certain portion of its normal DNA in it. Through the use of Hox genes, an animal which would normally have, for example, a select portion of its spine or its tail can be made, so as to not have this particular part at all. While this is a little on the bizarre side, it is teaching our scientists an inordinate amount of different things about how most life forms develop.

Through the use of Hox genes, a section of vertabrae can be knocked out, meaning that they do not develop as they normally would. In cases such as when a certain type of genes is spliced into place, an area which is normally just a vertabrae on the spine can actually be made to have a small set of ribs growing out of it, instead of not having any of them as it normally should. In this way, a mutant mouse can have some truly bizarre characteristics about it. This development can also be reversed, so that none of a mouse’s ribs develop as they normally would.

The fact is, with enough experimentation we may eventually be able to craft mice which have an unbelievable amount of odd changes over what we traditionally conceive of a mouse being. While the experiments with Hox genes and all that they can theoretically do are still in their most early stages, the possibilities for what may be on the way are far from being fully explored, or even fully devised. Simply put, we are only starting to learn what makes a life form develop into what it is going to be later on.

Chicken Teeth: They are Real

Everybody knows that chickens do not have teeth. Obviously, they are birds, and there are no known species of bird which have teeth. They lost this bodily structure as a genus between 60 and 80 million years ago. However, what would happen if they had both the physical structures in their bodies which could produce teeth, and the necessary genes which could be activated, causing them to grow a full set of chompers? Would the world be ready for chickens who have toothy grins? Believe it or not, there is evidence to suggest that in some kinds of chickens, not only could teeth exist, but during their early developmental stages the precursory steps which often grow into being teeth actually do come about.

From an evolutionary standpoint, chickens and crocodiles are fairly similar to one another. Even their jaw structures are fairly similar. So when scientists checked out some embryos of these two critters side by side, they found that in a small group of chromosomally abnormal chickens the early stages of tooth development were taking place, just as they were in the croc embryos. While the crocs still grew up to be far more dangerous than the chickens, this is some very intriguing research. True, there is probably no constructive reason for chickens to be bred with teeth in their mouth, but this is still intriguing.

This also shows off that the effect of atavism (which is when a trait disappears for several generations, and then resurfaces) can be used as an indicator that certain species evolved from other kinds. While the Scope Trial did happen roughly 90 years ago, there are still some people who could use just a little bit more convincing that evolution is both real and that it has happened to every existing species on this planet. In the case of a relationship between chickens and crocodiles, this is a fairly straight forward kind of obvious evidence that it has.
