It is tough to be healthy in the United States today. Obesity is at an all-time high, and it is easy to see why. Tasty but fattening food is available on every street corner. Doughnuts seem to be brought in nearly every day at the office for someone’s birthday. The temptation is always there to eat unhealthy food, and the access to poor dietary options might become even more tempting during a pregnancy.
Eating for two might come with an increased appetite, but it does not mean that mothers can eat with reckless abandonment. Rather than considering a pregnancy to be a time to eat, it needs to be a time to carefully consider everything that a mother consumes. Staying healthy during a pregnancy is about making the right choices and sticking with a plan. The first, and perhaps the most important decision that an expectant mother must make is to decide on a doctor.
A cliché states that it takes a village to raise a child. The mother needs to realize that even though it might seem like it at times, a pregnancy does not mean sticking it out alone. Getting with a doctor early and often during the pregnancy will keep the mother and child healthy. The doctor can map out a plan for diet and exercise during the different stages of the pregnancy.
Having a child means a change in the lives of parents. Even though the mother cannot act as if nothing is different in her life, having a baby does not mean that she can ignore her own health. Diet and exercise are important even when a woman is expecting. Monitoring the pregnancy week by week should including maintaining a healthy diet and getting in exercise. Having a child means a life chance, but it should not mean abandoning a healthy lifestyle.
